The History of Legacy Bible College

hudsonIn the mid-1970’s, Dr. Lee J. Hudson and Dr. Carl Powers recognized a great need for bi-vocational  pastors, church staff members, church teachers and leaders, and laypeople to have an opportunity to receive conservative, biblical training and to earn a degree.  God gave these men a burning desire to found an institution that would be evangelical, interdenominational, biblical, and conservative in its doctrine and teaching, and would unbiasedly admit any student wishing to learn.

Dr. Lee Hudson established the Heritage Bible Institute in 1979 with 19 students enrolled from Heritage and from other churches.  The institute offered a Certificate in Bible upon completion.

Dr. Carl Powers, a local Nazarene pastor, walked into Dr. Hudson’s office and Powers explained that he had helped found the Emmanuel Bible College in Nashville, Tennessee and felt God wanting him to do the same in Huntsville.  Dr. Hudson concurred. And revealed that God had been leading him in that direction also.

Heritage Bible College was the outcome of the collaboration of these two men, and the initial semester began in January of 1981 with a student body of eleven and with a faculty of two.

HBC began as a specialized college with membership in the American Association of Specialized Colleges offering a degree in the Bachelor Arts in Religion.  The curriculum included Bible, theology, speech, homiletics, English, counseling, evangelism, church history, church administration and philosophy, and it was accredited by the International Accrediting Commission for Schools, Colleges, and Theological Seminaries in 1984.

Meanwhile, in the summer of 1995, the Whitesburg Bible Institute was founded at Whitesburg Baptist Church to make formal Biblical and theological training readily available to everyone in the North Alabama area.  This Institute was the realization of a vision of Dr. Jimmy Jackson, the first Chairman of the Institute, who saw the need for a place of higher learning in the North Alabama area.  Classes were taught as non-credit courses and were mostly populated by the laity such as Sunday school teachers and church leaders whose primary degree work was in other disciplines, but who wanted a deeper foundational knowledge of scripture and theology.

Years earlier, Dr. Jimmy Jackson, pastor of Whitesburg Baptist Church and Dr. Hudson had discussed the need for the Baptists in Madison County to offer varying levels of Christian Education.  The Bible college and the Bible institute joined together in the spring of 2001 to become Whitesburg Heritage Bible College (WHBC), and the college moved to Whitesburg Baptist Church.

Just recently our name has changed again, to Legacy Bible College.  Although we are still located in the Whitesburg Baptist Church facility we are now a completely autonomous institution.

Since our inception, our school has graduated students with degrees in Biblical Counseling, Biblical Studies, Theological Studies, Christian Education, and Pastoral Ministry, as well as dozen of students who have completed certificates.

We look forward to a new chapter in the life of Legacy Bible College, as we launch several new degree plans and branch out to face new and exciting challenges.

  • “For me, teaching at Legacy Bible College is far more gratifying than teaching at any other school in the country because I know the students are here because they know they are called and want to be here. It has been a blessing for me, and it has also been one of my ways of meeting the needs of my neighbors.”
